Dementia Action Week (20 – 26 May) unites people, workplaces, schools and communities to take action, and improve the lives of people living with dementia.

Alzheimer’s Society is encouraging everyone to take action by starting a conversation; whether it’s calling a relative with dementia or visiting a neighbour, it’s time to start talking.

More than 850,000 people are living with dementia in the UK and 700,000 are acting as primary carers. We stand together with Alzheimer’s Society in their determination to create a dementia-friendly UK where people with dementia are included and supported to live the lives they want.

Museums can be fantastic resources to help unlock memories, improve communication and understanding, and enrich the lives of those living with dementia. Our award-winning House of Memories dementia awareness programme has provided training and resources to more than 12,000 health and social care professionals and families across the UK and internationally.

To mark Dementia Action Week, we have lots of free, memory-based events and activities that families, their loved ones and older visitors can get involved with at the Museum of Liverpool.

On Tuesday 21 May, 1.30-3.30pm, enjoy images centred on a Liverpool theme. Drop-in to ‘Liverpool memories’, handle reminiscence objects and photos, chat to the education team about stories told in the Museum, and leave a favourite memory on our memory tree. Take a stroll around the Museum of Liverpool on our Memory walk at 2pm. The memory walk is a dementia-friendly guided visit at the Museum, for older people to explore Liverpool’s past, and for people to share their memories and stories of life in Liverpool.

If you are a professional carer, regularly working with people living with dementia in health and social care you can book up to five free places for our dementia awareness training sessions on Wednesday 22 May for our 9am or 1.15pm session. Further sessions are also available to book in June, July, August, September, October and November.

On 22 May, the Royal College of Nursing Library & Archives would like to invite you to attend a special event - Three Things About Ageing: Empathy, Literature and Dementia - at the Museum of Liverpool from 6-8pm. Join author and nurse Molly Case (How to Treat People) and Dawne Garrett, Professional Lead for Care of Older People at the Royal College of Nursing, as we explore literature, empathy and depictions of ageing and care in fiction. National Museums Liverpool’s Director of Engagement, Carol Rogers will also be talking about our House of Memories programme. Pre-booking is essential. Find out more and book your place here.
